Today I was invited in a forum to share my views on how to manage organization politics. While thinking about it I realised most of us shy away from making a strategy around it thinking it's a bad thing whereas the first step to overcome it is to accept it as a reality of life. The more we run away from it , the more it engulfs us.
Politics is basically power struggle. Everyone should put their best foot forward to become the power center in their team/workplace. And how do we do it? If you are new to the team, Its important to understand what's the role of every individual. Who is boss's mouthpiece? Who are the star employees? Who are the influencers? Once we get a hold of this we would new what to signal to whom.
Next comes the area of bad politics. How do we handle it? Remember people who plays bad politics are surely mediocre in their thought process if not in their work. The best and easiest way to avoid being a victim is to focus on excelling in your area and becoming the best version of yourself. When you are a star no one would really dare to meddle with you.
Along with doing your work well, you should also practice signalling to people that you can't be treated as a doormat. Demonstrate the best professional behaviour and also try to enter the unseen inner circle.
Bing Fa says a leader needs to observe and ignore such people/behaviour. But when the right time comes without any consideration such negative people/action needs to be removed from the system.
In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that please remember that you are not alone in this. It happens to nearly every one who is trying to make a genuine career. But I do accept that it can really take a toll on the mental health and if you feel you are getting really stressed due to it please talk to a mentor immediately.
